Heritage Volunteers from Colchester DFAS are involved in a number of interesting stimulating projects in Colchester and the surrounding area.
COLCHESTER CASTLE MUSEUM AND HOLLYTREES MUSEUM
Colchester DFAS heritage volunteers assist school parties and visitors at both Colchester’s Castle Museum and Hollytrees Museums as part of the front-of-house team. They undertake a variety of roles, answering queries, and interpreting objects and displays to bring history to life. They also participate in major conservation projects at both museums, having been shown and taught conservation methods by the conservator. These include repacking dress accessories from Colchester Museums’ Costume Collection, repackaging the doll collection at Hollytrees, and a third ongoing volunteering project involving the Castle’s extensive collection of Roman coins, which need to be rehoused in specially designed boxes and relabelled.
BOURNE MILL, COLCHESTER
In conjunction with the History Department at the University of Essex and a local historian, CDFAS volunteers are carrying out research into the history of Bourne Mill, a grade I listed building dating back to the 16th century and owned by the National Trust. Research results are used for displays in the Mill and on the National Trust website. A leaflet is being produced thanks to our volunteers.
SIR ALFRED MUNNINGS ART MUSEUM, DEDHAM
Volunteers are involved in cataloguing the paintings, house contents, artist studio contents, clothing and horse show rosettes which are all in Castle House, the former home of artist Sir Alfred Munnings.
Colchester DFAS volunteers lead guided tours during the summer delving into this building’s fascinating 900-year-old history.
